About JEE Mains

INTRODUCTION AND SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

Admission criteria to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs, Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions, Institutions funded by participating State Governments, and other Institutions shall include the performance in the class 12/equivalent qualifying Examination and in the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main). The Paper-1 (B. E./B. Tech.) of JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.

YEAR OF APPEARENCE IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATION (QE)

Only those candidates who have passed their Class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying examination; or those who are appearing in their Class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying examination are eligible to appear in JEE(Main). 

NUMBER OF SUBJECTS IN THE QUALIFYING EXAMINATION

Candidates must have taken at least five subjects in class 12th/qualifying examination in order to be eligible for writing JEE (Main). The candidates who have taken four subjects are not permitted to write JEE (Main) and if such candidates appear in JEE(Main) by furnishing wrong information, their rank/result will not be declared.

NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS

The number of attempts which a candidate can avail at JEE (Main) shall be limited to 03 (three).

LIST OF QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS

I. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/ state Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc.

II. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.

III. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

IV. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.

V. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

VI. H.S.C. vocational examination. [Only for Admission to IITs]

VII. A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a state board of technical education of at least 3 year duration. [Only for Admission to IITs]

VIII. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level. [Only for Admission to IITs]

IX. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva. [Only for Admission to IITs]

In case the relevant QE is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level. [Only for Admission to IITs]
