Last year I wrote KVPY SA exam and got a rank of 146(All India). By the time you write 1^st stage, some portions would not have been completed. So, during the starting of XI std it is better to start KVPY preparation by studying Phase 3 and Phase 4 topics of Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Optics and Electricity in Physics and Organic Chemistry are very important topics. Use the mock papers fruitfully and be prepared to write the first level in front of computer. Practice Pre RMO question papers for Maths. Biology preparation starts from IX standard. Read IX and X biology notes thoroughly. For Second stage you should be completely thorough in 7 to 8 topics. Mostly the panel asks you questions from the student appraisal form that you fill. Fill it honestly. Be polite when you speak with the panel members and be confident. Mostly they will be very friendly and when you get stuck they will try to help you. Make good use of the mock interviews conducted by FIITJEE. Revise notes properly. All the best!

I have been awarded a rank of 177 by IISC. KVPY is a different level of examination which requires a different approach to crack it.
