Academic Upbringing of Our Children

Author of this Blog is Prof. Ankur JainAcademic Director of FIITJEE Chennai Region (TN and Kerala) and is addressed to Parents whose children are either studying in FIITJEE or are looking forward to admitting their children in FIITJEE. Title of this Blog is as GOLD (Goal Oriented Learning and Development)

Our children are our biggest assets. They are the best gifts of the Mother Nature to us. We love them, we take care of them and we want only good to happen to them. Not only humans, even animals want to do best for their children. We humans want to do even better. We want our children to do well in life. In today’s hyper-competitive world, academic upbringing of children has become important and critical. We want our children’s dreams to come true. We want to protect our children from any thing wrong. We want to give them good education, and make them successful in life. We at FIITJEE share the exact same feeling for your children and want the same as for your wards. Yes it is true that not every student of FIITJEE qualifies for IIT to become a top engineer but every student who studies with us moves closer to what you want for them. Through this writing I wish to touch upon certain points related to parenting, Children’s academic upbringing, Success or failure in life and Happiness and frustration. Ultimately  Children are a gift to be explored and not a resource to be exploited.

As every finger in our hand is different, every child is different. We all know that the students are trying their best and putting the maximum efforts that they can in academics.  But as they are preparing for school examinations and simultaneously for competitive examinations, obviously they are also under pressure to perform. For that matter no child wants to perform bad in his/her examinations. In academic upbringing process, some students perform better than others.  Does that make them better or the other ones inferior. Answer is straight “No.” We run many races in this life and want to win every race but is it necessary that we win every race or is it ok to lose every race ? Does winning a race give us happiness or losing the race gives us happiness ? Of course winning the race gives us happiness. Every parent wants to be happy and wants his/her children to be happy but the question is what brings happiness. It can be debated but success in life brings happiness and failure brings frustration. So it is quite obvious that if we want a happy life, we have to work for success and that makes for parents’ happiness and success of their children the first priority. If the same is applicable for you (The Reader) as well, I advise you the following.

Help your Son/daughter Set a Goal. This Goal setting is an extremely important step towards long term happiness. Goals help students believe in themselves. Setting goals for yourself is a way to fuel your ambition. Let us give children the space to explore themselves, then talk to them and find out what kind of further assistance is required in reaching their goals. In case if the child selects the goal against your wish or desire, let us not demoralize or discourage the child and steal the sheen of his or her self-confidence, which is the key to success. Goal setting isn’t just about creating a plan for your life and holding yourself accountable; it’s also about giving us the inspiration necessary to aim for things we never thought possible. Some children have very clear goals: Like, I want to be an Astronaut, Automobile Engineer, Doctor, CA, IAS and so on, but some children don’t have any clear goals. Goal setting for them doesn’t mean that they are goalless. The Goals are of 2 types, Fixed Goals and Exploring Goals. Children those who have an exploring goal are occasionally confused with Children with no goals. Exploring a goal in itself is a goal and in fact a tougher goal than a Fixed Goal and needed to be dealt with carefully.
Not all, but Let us touch upon some goals and the way forward:

Engineering

If your child has a very clear goal of doing Engineering, then the next step will be to fix how to prepare for the competitive exams and how to reach the goal. Admissions in IITs and NITs are done through a combined test called JEE Main (stage 1 and for NITs) and JEE Advanced (Stage 2 and for IITs). Approx. 15 Lakh students write these exams every year and depending upon the goal you have to plan your preparation.

If you are looking forward to a Rank in Top 10 or Top 100 in IITJEE, then you have to plan an extremely aggressive preparation. You need to be in the hands of teachers who have a vast experience in the field of IITJEE. This is not a one teacher’s job. If any teacher tells you that by way of his teaching he can get you a top rank in IITJEE, he is definitely trying to fool you. To achieve a top rank you need the best clarity on every concept and a thorough practice to ensure you practically don’t make any mistake and are able to solve any question in IITJEE. If results are to be believed, only FIITJEE is an institution where you will find maximum ranks in Top 100 out of the students who have sincerely studied in an institute. Yes, you may find some institutes who pay bribe to students to claim their results. FIITJEE is completely free from all such activities.

FIITJEE has a pool of the best experienced teachers working in FIITJEE for as long as 20 years. Not only one but a group of such teachers constantly work as a team for students who aspire to get a rank of Top 10 or Top 100 in IITJEE. Teaching is different from demonstration. If a good teacher delivers a lecture in a class or on TV or You Tube, it doesn’t benefit students unless they (as a Group of Teachers) work on every student. After clearing the concepts, they monitor students’ understanding and progress in every concept and motivate the students to work hard. Being an organised Institute, FIITJEE has invested heavily on technology to ensure no concept is left out and student has understood each concept, using all of the original and artificial Intelligence combined. Even if you are OK with a goal of 1000 or 2000 Rank in IITJEE, things wouldn’t change much. It is almost certain that every question in JEE Main or Advanced would be a new and unseen question and solving such questions in the pressure moments of exams requires a thorough understanding of the subject. No individual teacher can train you for such an exceptional examination. It requires the collaborative working of senior most teachers, teachers who monitor your clarity on each and every concept; Personalized attention is key to success.
If you want to do good even better than that of IITians, Top universities in the USA like Stanford University, MIT are the destinations waiting for you. You can join FIITEE either to take a dedicated program for Training of SAT and AP (For admission in the USA) or can take it as an ADD On Program to your IITJEE Program.

Medical

After the Supreme Court’s orders to make NEET Compulsory for admission in Medical colleges, almost every school has a NEET Coaching Program and every street in the city has a NEET Coaching centre. Though FIITJEE’s name is more attached to IITJEE but undoubtedly FIITJEE is the best place for NEET training too. Yes, at FIITJEE we have not concentrated on building big volumes of NEET students but a selected group of elite faculty members have been constantly working on Medical entrance as a part of our schooling operations in Hyderabad, Coimbatore and few other places. We’ve mastered the art of preparing for NEET in a schooling environment and free from stress. Yes, it is not a rocket science to prepare for NEET but for an admission in a good Govt. College you need to have a good score. Another aspect of NEET preparation is the training for Physics and Chemistry. Majority of NEET aspirants lag expertise in Physics and Chemistry and that amounts to 50% of score of NEET. At FIITJEE you get the best of all four subjects (Zoology, Botany, Physics and Chemistry).

Exploring

Well, if you and your ward are still exploring the field for a right goal, this in itself is a goal and in fact a tougher goal. You need to explore :

What are your liking ? Interests ?
What are your capabilities ?
The areas where if you work upon you are likely to do better.

At FIITJEE we don’t just train you for IITJEE or NEET, we also help you choose what is best for you. Over a period of years, we have evolved a strong Goal setting-cum-monitoring exercise. If you indicate in the beginning that you are still exploring a goal for yourself, Our Expert faculty members will monitor your performance in a different way. Instead of guiding you towards a goal, they will do a thorough SWOT (Strengths, Weakness, opportunity and threats) analysis for you. Simultaneously you’ll be trained for best in science and mathematics.

There is a half-truth which people know. Many believe that FIITJEE focuses only on IITJEE or NEET. This is a half-truth. Yes, our focus area is Science and Mathematics and by way of our education, we help students nurture their wisdom. When you come to class XI, you need to choose between Science, Mathematics, Biology, Commerce or Humanities. Yes, we don’t help children opting for Commerce or humanities, but for PCM and B FIITJEE is the best place to learn and explore. For Class VIII students going to IX, we recommend you to choose our 4-year Classroom Program over Supreme 4-year Integrated School Program as our classroom programs allow you to exit after class X in case you explore a different Goal other than Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology.

The Next step after Fixing the Goal will be to plan Academics. You can choose an intensive mode of preparation or a balanced one or even Guided Self-studies. Different children perform in different environment. Some children need a constant motivation and push and some others perform by studying quietly. From the session of 2018 we are making our training more personalized, oriented to your goal and in a way that your best comes out of you. And it is not happening overnight. We are working on it for years and bringing newer innovations every year. Our Improved results in both IITJEE and NEET are the testimony to the same.

Happiness does not come from doing easy work but from the afterglow of satisfaction that comes from the achievement of a difficult task that demanded our best. If you have a suggestion or a comment, please feel free to post. We take all comments and suggestions very seriously.

Just as a spam you people send message for the student who enrolled in your office even before 10 years. You don't update your database. First rectify yourself and start teaching others.

    2. I am a parent of an existing FIITJEE student. This article interested me and gave me a couple of insights. Thanks. However, I felt bad reading the rude language of Shri. Shankar. He may be a past student and felt this message was a noise. Usually, if noise lands on our desk (which happens through multiple channels), we ignore and move on. So, I request Shri. Shankar to avoid expressing intolerance with rude retorts, especially in a public platform. Thanks for understanding.
